ANNUAL SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS
January 16 – February 5, 2010

An exhibition of artwork by students, grades 7-12
from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, and Ashtabula counties.

The Scholastic Art Awards program is the most prestigious arts recognition and scholarship program of its kind in the country. This program is administered nationally by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. Since 1923, the Awards have encouraged more than 13 million student participants; recognized more than 2.5 million young artists and writers and distributed more than $25 million in awards and scholarships. The McDonough Museum of Art is the regional affiliate for this national program.

The regional exhibition is juried according to national standards and standards set by the regional executive committee. The jurors chose Gold Key, Silver Key, American Vision Awards (best of show) and special regional awards. The Gold Key and American Vision Award recipients go on to be judged at the national level. This past year we had five national winners with three of the works going to New York to be exhibited. Students at the local level have a chance to win scholarships and special awards.

The participating art educators choose nine works of art to be submitted for the jurors. All works submitted are on display at the Museum for the duration of the exhibition.  In the past five years we have at various times implemented billboard and t-shirt competitions in order to give a larger number of students an opportunity to participate. An awards ceremony takes place at the Butler Institute of American Art and all participating students are invited to attend a reception at the McDonough Museum of Art. This program helps to stress to parents and community members the importance of visual arts education in our schools.

This wonderful program has become a tradition that is eagerly anticipated by the students, teachers, parents and the community at large. We have a dedicated executive committee of arts educators who provide many hours year round to make this a successful program for the students.
