MAD about the ARTS has become a leading cultural event in the Youngstown area and region. On Friday, February 20th, enjoy an evening of fine wine, food, art, and music at the 13th Annual Mad About the Arts 2009. There will be a Friends of the Arts Preview Reception at 6:30 p.m. and the evening’s main event from 7:30 to 10:30p.m. This event at the McDonough Museum of Art benefits two of Youngstown State University’s outstanding institutions: the McDonough Museum of Art and SMARTS–Students Motivated by the Arts. The evening is always a tremendous success supported by the generousity of local sponsors and patrons.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of last year’s event, again we are featuring hors d’oeuvres from several area restaurants. Premier wines and appetizers will be served at the Friends of MAD about the ARTS Preview Reception at 6:30 p.m. The pre-reception will showcase Brady’s Leap, a Celtic musical troupe that blends traditional music with modern style. Brady’s Leap, a local favorite, is comprised of five musicians, four of whom are YSU faculty and staff. The main event from 7:30-10:30 p.m. will feature the Second Avenue Band, a group of exhilarating players that will provide classic selections of Rhythm and Blues, Swing, Jazz, and Top 40-everything to keep you dancing!

On display throughout the galleries, the event will feature the much loved and long awaited Alumni Exhibition. Mary Antonakos, Director of I-Space Gallery in Chicago will jury the exhibition. This celebration  will honor department of art graduates and over thirty-five years of arts education at YSU.

MAD about the ARTS benefits both SMARTS–Students Motivated by the Arts and the McDonough Museum of Art, a center for contemporary ideas, art, education, and community. SMARTS is a PK-16 quality arts education partnership between Youngstown State University’s College of Fine and Performing Arts, the College of Education, the Youngstown City Schools, and the many vital arts of organizations in our area.
