In 1992 Mary Antonakos helped to establish I space as an off site gallery for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Chicago. She has been the Director of
I space for 17 years where she organizes, developes, and promotes 15 – 20 exhibitions annually working closely with faculty and students in the College as well as outside guest curators.

“The decision to select an outsider to choose work for an Alumni Exhibition is always a bit of a gamble. An outsider doesn’t know the community, doesn’t have a connection to it or any investment in it. So how will this outsider put together an exhibition that will truly reflect the best work by Youngstown State University alumni? After all, a few digital images can’t tell the whole story. But sometimes, this point of view opens up possibilities and opportunities that might be missed by the insider and a new story is created.

The challenge for the outsider is to see what is not there. Each image submitted for review presents information. Clues are there in the composition and materials; but the true color and texture in the painting or drawing can only be suggested in a reproduction. What am I missing? Work must be viewed again and again to try to fill in the gaps, to understand what is there.

Eventually, what results is a story that is both mine as the outsider, and yours as the insider. As the outsider I bring my biases, my point of view, my history. You as the insider bring a wonderful depth and breadth of work. I was impressed by the ceramics, sculpture, and range of work available. I enjoyed learning about your community through your drawings, photographs and collages. Together we have formed an exhibition that reflects who we are, and gives us an opportunity to communicate with each other and a wider audience.”
